What Is a Fractional SEO Lead?

Most businesses don’t have an SEO problem. They have an SEO ownership problem.

Content is being written. Reports are being shared. Technical fixes are being discussed. But nobody senior owns the roadmap, so activity stays scattered and growth stalls.

A fractional SEO lead fills that gap: one experienced person who sets the strategy, prioritises the work, guides implementation and connects SEO to commercial outcomes, typically one to a few days a week, at a fraction of the cost of a full-time Head of SEO.

What the role covers

The core of the job is decision-making, not deliverables: what to fix, what to create, what to measure, and what to stop wasting time on. In practice that means owning the SEO roadmap, prioritising technical and content work, directing agencies or freelancers, and reporting in terms senior leaders actually use.

When it makes sense

If you have SEO activity but unclear results, technical recommendations stuck in a backlog, or an agency that needs stronger direction, that’s the profile. If you have no SEO activity at all, start with a leadership review instead.
